“Exploring beautiful Viñales”

Join us and experience one of Cuba’s most beautiful areas. Viñales is a lush and enchanting valley located in the far west of the country. The valley and the village of the same name are a photographer’s dream. The special valley was created by the collapse of a giant cave. Everywhere limestone formations rise from the valley floor and create a dreamlike landscape. The valley floor itself is one of the most fertile agricultural areas in Cuba. Here, what is known as Cuba’s best tobacco is grown. In the middle of the valley lies the picturesque village of Viñales, which will be our base during this photo workshop.

From here, we will explore the valley, visit the many farms that are scattered like pearls across the valley floor, go exploring in the landscape, get to know the local population, and of course photograph uninhibitedly. In Viñales, subjects are abundant and offer photo opportunities that few other places can compete with. The people who live in Viñales are open and will invite us inside their homes. These are people who live off the earth and who have an earthy relationship with life.

On the last day in Viñales, we will experience the celebration of May 1st. This is a big celebration in Cuba with parades and festivities.

Join us then, on this adventure, a different experience. Join us and experience beautiful Viñales. All while you get inspiration and input to develop your photography. As with everything in Cuba, Viñales is a strange mixture of decay, intense life, saturated colours, sensuality, rural idyll and revolution. During the 8 days this tour lasts, you will put together a strong portfolio of images with a personal expression that will visually touch the viewer.

This workshop is aimed at photographers of all levels, from the beginner to the advanced photographer. Through informal talks about how to develop your photography and daily photo reviews—both individually and with the whole group—we will during the tour stimulate the development of new visual ideas and creativity that will stretch familiar notions of what good photography is. The tour is less about technique than about the expressiveness of the photo, but of course we will also talk about technique when and if necessary. However, the main focus is on the visual language and the creative process. Each student will be challenged to create images that show colour, passion, light and movement. Participants will have opportunities for one-on-one conversations and useful feedback from Otto and Sven to develop their strengths and overcome weaknesses. A closing slide show on the last night will highlight the best work from each student.

Practical Information:

The tour is planned so that the participants arrive in Havana during the weekend—on Monday April 24th at the latest. On the same Monday evening, we all meet for a welcome dinner. The next day we travel to Viñales, a three-hour bus ride out of Havana. There we live in private accommodation, in so-called casas particulares. Tuesday May 2nd we will return to Havana in the morning in order for the participants to be able to return to their respective home countries the same afternoon.

Every day in Viñales we we will venture out and photograph. The tour is led by the two experienced photographers Sven Creutzmann and Otto von Münchow, who both know Cuba inside out after having lived and worked there for tens of years, respectively. They will be out in the field taking photos along with the participants, partly individually, partly in teams throughout the entire photo tour. They will both be available to participants at all times.

Studio Lights & Model on Location
This time we will add something special, for the first time in Viñales. In partnership with a fashion designer we will have 2 exciting shooting session where we will photograph a beautiful cuban model, together with a local “cowboy”, against the backdrop of the gorgeous Viñales valley landscape. We will use professional Profoto strobes and light modifiers.

Through daily photo feedback and guidance, each participant will learn to see better, photographically, and become better at using the visual language, as well as be able to express visually and transform what she or he sees into strong images. The fact that we have two photographers who are always present every day ensures that the participants get plenty of individual guidance when needed.

This will be an intimate and personal photo tour with plenty of time for each participant. For this reason, the number of participants is limited to 12 people. This may cause the workshop to fill up quickly. Only when the advance has been paid will you be registered as a participant. Participants are registered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The price for the photo tour is euro 2065. It covers the participation fee. A deposit of euro 350 will be required upon registration. The remaining amount must be paid by March 1st. An invoice is sent upon registration.
